San Gimignano
Gastronomy, history, nature, and tourism. Frantoio di San Gimignano is located in one of the most picturesque and renowned areas of Tuscany, nestled in green hills between Siena and Florence on which the charming medieval hill town of San Gimignano stands: a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as “the Town of Fine Towers” as it originally had 72 tower houses, of which about a dozen remain today. The artistic and cultural beauties of the area are flanked by the excellence of local gastronomy, which is best represented in the production of high-quality extra virgin olive oil, thereby contributing to configuring a goal sought and visited by tourists from every continent in the world.
Frantoio di San Gimignano: The Past
For decades, the Frantoio di San Gimignano oil mill has set the standard for Tuscan olive growers in the area between Siena and Florence. The olive tree has been significant from an agricultural perspective in this vast land ever since the late Middle Ages, when sharecropping and mixed cultivation spread like wildfire, deep rooting the culture and cultivation of this fruit, which have been handed down to this day.
A TERRITORY DEDICATED TO THE CULTIVATION OF OLIVE TREES
Currently, there are more than 800 hectares of land in San Gimignano intended for olive groves, and the most cultivated varieties are the moraiolo, the frantoiano and the leccino, while it is possible to count about 10,000 hectares of olive groves within a radius of 20km. This richness was motivation enough throughout the 80s to build the Frantoio di San Gimignano oil mill, which immediately became a production area of excellent oils and which, over the years, has undergone several renovations and investments to improve the service for local olive growers.
Frantoio di San Gimignano: The Present
The oil mill was officially acquired in 2019 by the Oleificio Toscano Morettini, which took over its management, production, and development. This company, founded in 1950, is among the reference companies worldwide for the production of extra virgin olive oil and has chosen to put its decades of experience also at the service of the thriving olive sector of San Gimignano.
Between past and future: Oleificio Morettini has made several investments in the oil mill with a dual purpose: production and tourism. The first commitment was oriented towards modernising the machinery and acquiring cutting-edge technology to facilitate production, bottling, and conservation of the oil. On the other hand, the complete recovery and redevelopment of all the areas of the historical building allowed opening the oil mill for visits by schoolchildren and tourists, offering interesting educational experiences combined with tastings of extra virgin olive oil and the possibility of finding numerous oil-based products (from gastronomy to cosmetics).
Oleificio Toscano Morettini
A passion for oil that has been passed down from generation to generation. The secrets that lie behind the production of high-quality extra virgin olive oil have been handed down over the decades by the Morettini family, which has combined the ancient skills of master millers with a forward-looking business approach that has allowed it to keep up with the times and adapt to market demands.
A STRONG CAPACITY WHEN SELECTING THE FINEST OLIVES
The history of Oleificio Morettini began evolving after the Second World War with Armando Morettini’s achievement of the licence to trade food products and with the acquisition of unanimous appreciation, especially for the quality of its Tuscan oil. Over the years, the Morettini company began to specialise in the production, bottling, and sale of extra virgin olive oil, characterised by its ability to select the finest olives and to collaborate with some of the best mills in the region and central Italy.
A GROWTH THAT HAS CONTINUED FOR THREE GENERATIONS
Armando’s skills, constantly supported by his wife Elvia, were acquired by his son Lauro, who joined the company in 1978 and who, together with his brother Minolfo, was the promoter of new ideas, new enthusiasm and new commercial prospects that have fostered the success of Oleificio Morettini on national and international markets. A new step forward was taken with the advent of the third generation, with Giovanni and Alberto joining their father Lauro at the helm of the company and facilitating some important transactions to consolidate the brand and create further scenarios of development. These include the acquisition of the San Gimignano Oil Mill and the creation of the SuprEvo project in Monte San Savino, which integrates a museum, an oil mill, and a store to obtain, tell, and spread the perfection of the extra virgin olive oil.
A BRAND PAR EXCELLENCE ON TABLES ALL AROUND THE WORLD
Today, the Morettini brand is synonymous with Tuscan and Italian olive oil excellence and its products are distributed to markets worldwide: from Brazil to the USA, from China to Japan. The true secret behind this expansion is its ability to combine tradition and innovation by paying meticulous attention to each stage of production, which is driven by the desire to offer consumers a premium quality oil that strikes a harmonious balance between all its flavours. These characteristics have brought on board many prestigious partners: Oleificio Morettini has been a supplier to Inter Milan since 1989, it has been chosen for the kitchens of illustrious chefs, such as Alessandro Borghese, and by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation for the production of the 2016 Jubilee Oil.
